Overview
Spend half a day discovering the capital with a licensed Omani guide who grew up here. We begin at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, one of the largest in the world, where you will learn the stories behind its chandelier and its hand-knotted Persian carpet. From there we drive along the Corniche to Mutrah, wander the frankincense-scented lanes of the souq and watch the fishermen at the harbour. In Old Muscat we photograph Al Alam Palace and the twin Portuguese forts of Mirani and Jalali before sitting down to a traditional Omani meal — shuwa or maqbous, fresh bread, dates, halwa and Omani coffee — served the way local families enjoy it.
