Private Nizwa Fort, Souq & Jebel Akhdar 4WD Tour
Overview
History in the morning, mountains in the afternoon. In Nizwa your guide walks you through the round tower of the fort — built to withstand cannon fire — and the souq famous for silverwork, pottery and, on Fridays, the livestock auction. We continue to the checkpoint at Birkat Al Mouz where only 4WDs may climb to Jebel Akhdar. On the Saiq Plateau, 2,000 m up, the air is cool and the terraces of Al Ayn and Wadi Bani Habib are layered with pomegranate, walnut and, in April, damask roses distilled into rosewater. Lunch is at a mountain restaurant with views across the canyon, and there is an easy walk between the abandoned mud villages before we descend to Muscat.
